Impact of S20 Transition: Citations
Offering an open access route for authors without the need to pay an APC can make the journal more competitive and lead to an increase in submissions. For some of the journals we have transitioned to S20, we have seen moderate growth in submissions. For Lingusitics, during the year of the flip, submissions decreased slightly, but then increased 15% between 2022 and 2023. It is not always possible to attribute submission trends directly to S20, and we anticipate it will take several years to understand the true impact on submissions in more detail.

Prof. Dr. Volker Gast,
Editor-in-Chief of Linguistics
"As the Editor-in-Chief of Linguistics I am very happy about the flip to S2O in 2022. As a linguist and author, I believe that Open Access accelerates research progress, as new findings are disseminated more rapidly, and more broadly. As an editor I believe that it will give the journal even more visibility and impact. In the last two years we have received more submissions from high impact authors than previously, in some cases from authors who only submit to Open Access journals. Open Access publication is essential to the younger generations of linguists, and it is important that we, as a journal, remain attractive for them"
